Seasoned Expat is a twice-a-week intelligence brief for people living abroad or building the plan to get there — not tourists, not relocation agencies, not the general travel press. Every item is filtered to one test: does this change a visa, a tax bill, or a plan to move?

How we pick what matters

There's no shortage of noise about living abroad — travel-blog listicles, relocation-agency sales copy, forum hearsay from three years ago that never got updated. Most of it isn't built to be trusted with an actual decision. We cut hard against three filters, and an item has to clear at least one:

Your visa or residency status. Rule changes, processing-time shifts, and requirement updates from the immigration authorities you actually answer to.
Your money. Tax-residency thresholds, filing deadlines, and currency or banking rules that change what a move costs or what you owe.
Your plan to move or stay. Visa-program launches and closures, cost-of-living shifts, and the on-the-ground realities that change whether a move still makes sense.

If an item doesn't change a decision about where you can live, what you owe, or when you need to act, it doesn't run. Generic "10 best countries for digital nomads" listicles are exactly what we leave out.

The primary sources we monitor

We don't rehash relocation blogs or recycle forum threads. Where a government publishes its own record, we read that record directly — the rulemakings, the caseworker guidance, the agency notices themselves. Where it doesn't, we read the reporting, and we tell you that's what we're doing:

• The U.S. Federal Register — every immigration rule and proposed rule the day it publishes, plus State Department and USCIS rulemakings on passports, visa categories, and fees.
• USCIS — form revisions, policy updates, and filing changes, direct from the agency.
• UK Visas & Immigration — the caseworker guidance and sponsor rules that actually decide UK applications, as the Home Office publishes them.
• Immigration Service Delivery, Ireland — registration, permission and citizenship notices as the ISD issues them.
• Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada — program changes and processing announcements from IRCC.
• The international press, filtered — for the countries whose agencies publish no machine-readable record, we read the reporting and link it, so you can always see what the claim rests on.

Our role is judgment: we read the firehose of immigration and tax updates so you don't have to, and hand you only the changes that actually affect a plan to move, stay, or come home.

Independent by design

Most content about living abroad is published by relocation agencies, visa consultancies, or real estate brokers with something to sell you. We sell none of those things. Seasoned Expat's only product is the brief itself, which means our read on a visa program or a country's cost of living answers to you, not to a commission. Featured partnerships, when they exist, are always labeled and never shape editorial judgment.

How it's made
